Oldest Building in Athens Burns
The oldest surviving structure in Athens was destroyed by a late afternoon fire - Monday, April 11. The building was believed to be the original post office, and later a church before being used as a home to several different families over the years. The cause of the fire is under investigation but has been listed as suspicious. The WV State Fire Marshall's Office along with the WV State Police are investigating.
Single Vehicle MVA Above Unity Road
Units from the AVFD responded to a report of a single vehicle MVA on Unity Road in the vinicity of Caldwell Street. Upon arrival, crews found a Chevrolet S-10 truck had left Caldwell Street,went over an embankment, and hit a tree on Unity Road. 101 Engine #1 deployed a 1 3/4 inch hose line as a precaution due to the vehicle leading fluids. No one was injured. The cause is still under investigation.
Athens responds to multi-department structure fire
Athens responded to the Kegley Community outside of Princeton for a structure fire, Tuesday, March 22. The home was fully involved at the time of emergency services arrival. Firefighters from East River, Green Valley and Bluestone Valley also responded. The cause of the fire is still under investigation
