| The Athens Volunteer Fire Department responded to the South Towers of Concord University on Monday, September 29. The fire was reported about 4:45 and units arrived within 5 minutes of the call. The central trash chute in the tower had caught fire. Fast-acting members of Concords RA (Resident Advisors) quickly extinguished the flames with fire extinguishers. When units arrived, they encountered moderate smoke on most floors due to the trash chute running the entire height of the building. Athens firefighters were assited my members of the East River Volunteer Department as part of the counties new automatic aid agreement. The departments arrived within 10 minutes of each other. In the event of a major fire on campus that could be a deciding factor. The cause of the blaze was undetermined, however, investigators found no evidence of arson. The WV State Fire Marshall's office also investigated. The RA's were applauded for their efforts to quickly ensure all occupants were safely evacuated. |
