Welcome Teachers! We know you want to give your students the best education possible. Why not supplement that education with a deep knowledge of fire safety. Every year more then 65% of accidental fires in the home are caused by kids playing with some form of fire. Fire Prevention week is only one visit out of the entire year, and kids just don't always remember what we tell them. It is up to you to help educate the kids on the importance of practicing fire safety. Check out the lesson listed here.

EDITH (Exit Drills In The Home)
One of the greatest lessons you can help teach yougsters is E.D.I.T.H. or exit drill in the home. This makes kids aware of the possible escape routes and what to do if one route is blocked. Try this activity:
1. Have students take out a sheet of paper and draw their bedroom. Be sure they include windows, doors (exit and closets), and as much furniture and toys as they can remember.
2. Next have them draw a line from their bed to the door exiting the room. Tell them that this is the primary escape route, or the first way to check. Be sure to tell them that if the door is closed they should check for heat before opening.
3. With a different color crayon or pencil, have the kids draw another line from the bed to the window. Be sure they know that this is where they need to go if they can't get out of their door. If they are on the ground floor they can use this as a second escape route. If they are above the ground floor and don't have a ladder, they need to just wait beside the window.
To add to this activity you can...
1. Have students draw the rest of the house and continue the escape route line all the way outside of the home. Be sure they list at least two ways out!
2. See if the kids can draw things that might be in the way of getting out (e.g. a television in front of the window, or a door that is blocked by furniture.)
